Gen 2 Road Wheels Are Here!

About Our Access Series Wheels:

Cutting costs in just the right places to bring you performance and reliability based carbon wheels at a lower price-point.  While most other wheel companies compromise on rim profile options in their base-level carbon wheels, we're bringing you all of the same rim profiles in our Access Series as our Elite Series.  What sets the Access and Elite Series wheels apart are the spokes, hubs, and modulus of carbon fiber.  Our Access Series utilizes Sapim CX Sprint spokes, Scalar R9 hubs, and Toray T700 carbon fiber based rims.  No compromise on rim profile options, rim finish, or hand-built build quality.

Description:

Built to optimize the performance of your road bike.  With a depth of 50mm in the front and 58mm in the rear, these wheels are BUILT FOR SPEED.  Whether you're flying down the coast on the weekend group ride, or participating in a wicked fast road race, these wheels will help propel you to the front.  With our Gen 2 road rims, we've opened up the internal rim width to 24mm, optimizing for 28-30c tubeless-ready and clincher tires.  Bringing the internal width to 24mm provides all of the benefits of a wide modern road rim (lower rolling resistance, improved aerodynamics, and increased comfort with larger volume tires), while being more in line with the ETRTO standards compared to the 25mm hookless rims that other brands are advertising to be compatible with 28c tires.  The hooked bead on our rims is safer than hookless in certain situations and provides more tire options for riders.  Please find all of the tech specs for this wheelset listed in the second photo.

Product Details:

Carbon Rims:  Aerospace-grade Toray carbon fiber is utilized to manufacture extremely high-quality rims. These rims are produced very consistently and require very little post processing after coming out of the autoclave and being released from the mold.  We don't cover the carbon with an opaque layer of paint like some other brands do (they will typically do this to cover blemishes in the carbon and produce lower cost rims).  The finish of our rims is very similar to that of an ENVE SES rim.

Hubs:  Our R9 hubs provide cost savings over DT Swiss hubs while maintaining performance, serviceability, and reliability.  The axle and freehub body are precision machined from 7075 aluminum while the hub shell is precision machined from 6061 aluminum.  The non-propriety construction utilizes a 36T DT Swiss ratchet design from an expired patent.  Additionally, DT Swiss star ratchet freehub bodies are completely interchangeable, offering maximum serviceability and flexibility when switching between groupsets.

Spokes:  Sapim CX Sprint bladed spokes are chosen for their supreme performance characteristics and reliability. The CX Sprint spoke is slightly thicker than the CX Ray, but maintains the renowned fatigue resistant. As a spoke undergoes hundreds of thousands of fatigue cycles, this is a significant factor. The bladed design provides significant aerodynamic benefits over traditional round spokes and an unmatched ride quality due to the anisotropic properties.

Nipples:  While many wheel brands choose anodized aluminum nipples for their weight, we opted for black-oxide coated brass nipples to maximize corrosion resistance and reliability. While the anodized coating on aluminum nipples acts as a shield against corrosion, not all nipples will be anodized perfectly in large batches. Additionally, if the anodized coating is partially removed during the wheel building process due to friction, and bare aluminum is exposed, galvanic corrosion can attack the aluminum nipple and cause failure. Brass is more similar to stainless steel and carbon on the anodic index, in comparison to aluminum, meaning that corrosion will be much less likely to occur, and occur at a slower rate. This is especially important in coastal areas with salty air.

Tubeless Tape:  When setting up your tires tubeless, the tape on the rims can make or break the your experience.  Given this, we knew that we needed a rock-solid tape for our rims that you can count on.  When creating our tubeless tape, we experimented with over 10 different materials in combination with multiple adhesives to create what we believe is the best tubeless tape on the market.

Presta Valves:  Our premium presta valves are precision machined from aerospace-grade 7075 aluminum, one of the strongest aluminum alloys on the market.  These valves are designed to maximize reliability and aesthetics.

Decals:  Ultra-thin, ultra-durable.  Our long-lasting decals are designed to handle the elements and won't peel off from being hit with rocks or tire levers like decals from other brands would.

Additional Information:

All of our wheels are proudly hand-built and come tubeless ready with our tape and valves installed.  Centerlock disc lockrings are not included with the wheelset, but may be purchased separately.  Thru-axles are not included as they are considered part of the frameset for a bike.

Our products are designed and built to last, with serviceability in mind.  This is the way it should be.  You can be sure that you'll be riding top quality wheels that you can count on.  The expectations are high at Scalar Wheels and if we aren't happy with a product, or wouldn't ride on it ourselves, we won't sell it.  Rims go through testing above industry standards and we have a multi-point inspection process throughout the wheel-build to ensure we are producing reliable products.

Confidence and stability in all conditions

After several months of riding these wheels, I can honestly say my love at first sight has turned into the real deal. First off... that width. The 24mm ID sets up a 30mm Conti right where it needs to be with the rims outer profile. Putting that much rubber on the road has greatly increased my race pace cornering confidence, especially on less-than-ideal surfaces. Its like riding on the proverbial rails.

Another thing that’s really impressed me is the high-speed stability and wind resistance of the R50/58 setup. As I spend much of my training time on San Diego’s backcountry roads, I am no stranger to fast descents and unpredictable winds. The rim profile Scalar has engineered here feels as aero as many deeper section wheels but has proven to be way more manageable when that nasty cross-headwind slams into you halfway down a sketchy descent. I don’t know if it’s black magic or sound engineering, but Scalar sure nailed it in this regard.

Power transfer and rigidity? Both right on the money. Of course, with these hoops laced to DT Swiss with CX Rays I’d accept nothing less.
As for weight I expected these to be a bit tubby due to being as wide as they are, but I was pleasantly surprised to find them to be lighter than any of my other race wheels, including my previous favorite name brand British wheelset.

From sending it at your local GP to an all-day mountain epic, these wheels get it done with style.

Comfort, Speed, Quality

As a competitive cyclist and engineer I'm always looking to get the most out of my equipment for training and race day. I have a set of the Elite Series 50/58's w/ DT240 hubs and 30" tires and they have been an absolute joy to train and compete on. For reference, I previously rode with Zipp 404s on 28" tires.

The Scalar Elite Series 50/58's feel and look very high quality, come in at a very competitive 1475grams with my DT240s, are an absolute dream to ride on with the 24mm internal rim width...and they are hooked (Safety First)! Similarly spec'd wheels from other competitive brands are typically hundreds of dollars more! The icing on the cake is that each wheel is hand built and QC'ed right here in the USA.

If you're looking for a competitive edge at an affordable price I highly recommend these wheels!

All Around High Quality, Fast Wheelset at a Reasonable Price Point

I've ridden a LOT of wheelsets over the past few years from both the big brands and some more boutique brands. Scalars absolutely rip.

I don't love the idea of spending my first born on independent training and racing wheelsets, so the wheelset that I choose has to be something that can really do it all.

Of course at 50/58 these wheels absolutely fly in a race setting but they feel durable and high quality enough that I can roll 100+ mile training rides without hesitation.

The 24mm ID is ideal for me. I personally run 30s and after blowing the Contis up to riding pressure they measure about 31.6mm. This is PERFECT for the profile of these rims for aerodynamics and of course 30s are so dang supple. Everyone is going wider for a reason.

We opted for DT240 hubs and they turn over nicely. Absolutely zero complaints, they roll smooth, engage quickly when we need to stomp pedals, and you can tell the construction of the rims is top notch.

This may also very well be the lightest wheelset I've ever owned or raced. I don't feel hindered by the depth on steep pitches or sustained climbs which is always a worry with deeper setups.

Spokes are tensioned properly, wheels are true, and they look fresh. Highly recommend these, great job Scalar.
