Description:

Ready for an adventure?  Our 35mm deep gravel wheels are fun, playful, comfortable, and fast.  We've opened up the internal width to 26mm to better accommodate and support today's gravel tires.  The 35mm depth provides some aerodynamic benefits while keeping the weight low for powering through chunky gravel sections and accelerating out of single-track corners.  These are our most popular gravel wheels and designed for both casual weekend shredders and seasoned racers alike.  Whether you're tackling Unbound Gravel in Kansas, UnPAved in central Pennsylvania, The Mid South in Oklahoma, or the Big Sugar Classic in Arkansas, these wheels are for you.  Built around DT Swiss 350 hubs and using brass nipples to tension the spokes, these wheels are both performance and reliability oriented.  Please find additional specs for this wheelset listed in the second photo.

Product Details:

Carbon Rims:  Aerospace-grade Toray carbon fiber is utilized to manufacture extremely high-quality rims. These rims are produced very consistently and require very little post processing after coming out of the autoclave and being released from the mold.  We don't cover the carbon with an opaque layer of paint like some other brands do (they will typically do this to cover blemishes in the carbon and produce lower cost rims).  The finish of our rims is very similar to that of an ENVE SES rim.

Hubs:  DT Swiss 350 hubs are a proven reliable workhorse.  Bike shops from around the world have familiarity with DT Swiss hubs and love them for their balance of reliability, performance, and serviceability.  You can't go wrong.  In stock for Shimano and SRAM.  If you have a Campagnolo drivetrain, a compatible freehub body can be purchased (just send us a message prior to purchasing the wheelset).

Spokes:  Sapim CX Ray bladed spokes are chosen for their supreme performance characteristics and reliability. Although these are some of the most expensive spokes on the market, they are also among the most fatigue resistant. As a spoke undergoes hundreds of thousands of fatigue cycles, this is a significant factor. The bladed design provides significant aerodynamic benefits over traditional round spokes and an unmatched ride quality due to the anisotropic properties.

Nipples:  While many wheel brands choose anodized aluminum nipples for their weight, we opted for black-oxide coated brass nipples to maximize corrosion resistance and reliability. While the anodized coating on aluminum nipples acts as a shield against corrosion, not all nipples will be anodized perfectly in large batches. Additionally, if the anodized coating is partially removed during the wheel building process due to friction, and bare aluminum is exposed, galvanic corrosion can attack the aluminum nipple and cause failure. Brass is more similar to stainless steel and carbon on the anodic index, in comparison to aluminum, meaning that corrosion will be much less likely to occur, and occur at a slower rate. This is especially important in coastal areas with salty air.

Tubeless Tape:  When setting up your tires tubeless, the tape on the rims can make or break the your experience.  Given this, we knew that we needed a rock-solid tape for our rims that you can count on.  When creating our tubeless tape, we experimented with over 10 different materials in combination with multiple adhesives to create what we believe is the best tubeless tape on the market.

Presta Valves:  Our premium presta valves are precision machined from aerospace-grade 7075 aluminum, one of the strongest aluminum alloys on the market.  These valves are designed to maximize reliability and aesthetics.

Decals:  Ultra-thin, ultra-durable.  Our long-lasting decals are designed to handle the elements and won't peel off from being hit with rocks or tire levers like decals from other brands would.

Additional Information:

All of our wheels are proudly hand-built and come tubeless ready with our tape and valves installed.  Centerlock disc lockrings are not included with the wheelset, but may be purchased separately.

Our products are designed and built to last, with serviceability in mind.  This is the way it should be.  You can be sure that you'll be riding top quality wheels that you can count on.  The expectations are high at Scalar Wheels and if we aren't happy with a product, or wouldn't ride on it ourselves, we won't sell it.  Rims go through testing above industry standards and we have a multi-point inspection process throughout the wheel-build to ensure we are producing reliable products.

Hand Built in San Diego

I grew up racing only hand-built wheels, and it's good to be back. I like knowing who is building my wheels, which keeps me safe and fast. Ryan is detailed and conservative, and I like that sense of safety. I only ride DT hubs, I tested in the drop bar class of Quick N' Dirty and La Costa Preserve MTB trails. Buy local!

This is a fantastic wheelset 10/10

First off I'll stay this is a fantastic wheelset. These wheels are super fun, high quality and super sleek, 10/10 recommend (disclaimer this review is of a loaned wheelset).

First thing I noticed out of the box was the tough no-nonsense build with 3-cross Sapim 32 aero spoke lacing, proven DT hubs and brass nipples on a beautiful carbon rim. It's a wheelbuilders wheel with the best parts pulled off the shelf and built with meticulous attention to the little things like perfect rim taping and high quality valves.

I had become a bit bored with my gravel bike over the winter as I spent time with my zippy aero road bike. The gravel bike felt a bit lifeless and flat after getting used to so much road bike riding. My first ride on these wheels was the shakeout ride on Friday before BWR and right away it was "WOW!" It was a new bike with these wheels. The snap and quick feel that I'd grown accustomed to with my Aeroad was now on my gravel Grail. During the BWR the wheels performed wonderfully and were full of life. During BWR AZ I went off-line a few times and slammed into a few big "things" but the wheels just bounced off without a peep of complaint. The bike just felt dependable, quick and fun with the Scalars...emphasis on FUN!

I've ridden them many times since and they are still look great, roll true, super silent and a blast on and off road. I like that they are built with non-proprietary parts and methods so repairs can be performed easily and they won't become obsolete.

High Performance and High Speed!

These wheels are fantastic! I raced Tushar in the Crushar on this wheelset, and they were absolutely awesome! Really lightweight which is a huge plus, especially for hilly races and riding. Good internal rim width, my 42 mm tires blew up perfect on the rim and it really helped the cornering ability of my bike, adding a lot of confidence to my riding experience. Overall 10/10 wheelset and can't say enough good things about the quality and ride feel of them!

Been loving the width

Most gravel wheels are weird, they are either super narrow, shallow, and super light or big and bulky, more for bike packing stuff. These scalar wheels are the widest gravel wheel I have ever ridden, while still maintaining a weight of 1385g. I am very impressed! My favorite part about these wheels is the width and how the wheel gives my 42mm Specialized Pathfinder Pros so much support, I’ve been able to run lower pressure without having to worry about bottoming out the rim or rolling the tire.
